Every practice should have insurance, there are various things it can include such as buildings, equipment, contents, stock, public liability, and employers’ liability. If a veterinary practice employs anyone, then by law they must have employers’ liability insurance, also they should have cover for buildings and public liability insurance. What does veterinary practice insurance not cover?
It will not cover for incorrect treatment of an animal or incorrect advice given this would normally be a separate cover by a professional indemnity policy. It will also not cover staff members being off work through injury or illness, this would usually be covered by a group personal accident policy or a locum insurance policy.
Why do you need veterinary practice insurance?
By law you will need employers’ liability insurance as a minimum if you employ anyone, however, JPM would recommend that you do not trade without a full veterinary practice insurance policy and without public liability cover and equipment cover as the minimum.
